Theo Petsies Plush Product Review

My mother asked me what I wanted for my birthday.  I told her that I really wanted was a custom Pesties plush of my oldest dog, Theo.  At 14 years of age, I know that I will unfortunately not have Theo in my life forever.

The past five months have seen several major health issues afflict my furry best friend.  Theo had sudden onset glaucoma in his right eye and lost his vision immediately.  While losing his sight, we also thought that he had had stroke.  Theo was admitted to Veterinary Specialty Services in Missouri multiple times.

While at VSS, we made the decision to proceed with a CT scan and spinal tap. Thankfully, he was given a clean bill of health and a diagnosis of being an old dog.  Theo recently underwent an eight hour test to see if he has Cushing's disease.  The results were negative!

This made my desire for a Petsies plush of Theo quite strong.  I want to have something amazing to remember Theo by when his time comes.  Yes, I will definitely have the wonderful memories, fur covered clothing and worn out doggie sweaters.  But I wanted something more.

My husband and I ordered our first Pesties in honor of our differently-abled Dachshund, Hope.  The product of a backyard breeder, she was born without eyes and is completely deaf.  We were completely blown away when her plush arrived.

I knew that my Pesties of Theo was going to be amazing.  However, I had not fully prepared myself for the awesomeness that was to come.  The large, white box arrived with the word  PETSIES emblazoned on the sides.  My hands trembled as I slowly pulled off the packing tape.

I caught a glimpse of the tan fur.  Gently parting the tissue paper, I removed the plush.  My eyes welled with tears.  Theo's plush was perfect!

Theo's custom Petsies plush!

I love the texture of the fur!

As I inspected Theo's twin, I noticed the subtle details that Petsies had captured.  I had not told them that Theo's brown nose has black flecks in it.  Nor did I tell them about the scar on his front left leg made by a hot spot that took forever to heal.

The infamous hot spot scar.

Petsies did not simply copy Theo from the photos that I sent.  They actually took the time to pour over the images and detect the finite details and characteristics that make Theo the fantastically unique pooch that he is.

Theo and his twin!

I could not be happier with my Petsies plush.  Now, I have an amazing keepsake that will help keep my best friend in my life forever.  To create your own custom Petsies, visit their website at:  https://www.mypetsies.com/

BringerPet Fleece Blanket Product Review

To say that I love my furry babies would be a huge understatement.  These amazing animals are my entire world (plus my husband).  I love to share photos and stories with friends, family and essentially anyone who will listen.

It only stands to reason that I would want to show off my precious pets by placing their photos on numerous products.  From t-shirts to playing cards and custom plush, I love to immortalize their adorableness.

That is when I discovered BringerPet.  This up and coming business hosts a group of super talented artists who create gorgeous customized products that feature your pet as a hand-made cartoon.

How does it work?  First, head to their website at:  www.bringerpet.com.  Then simply select the desired product, upload your favorite pet photo and then prepare to be amazed!

I selected the 50 x 60 Ultra Soft Super Plush Fleece Blanket.  I was completely blown away!  Hope looks beyond adorable as a cartoon.  I loved that I had the opportunity to choose the background color.  Her image really pops against the light blue background.

Hope looks stunning!

The quality of the blanket is unbelievable.  I can honestly say that this is the softest blanket that I have ever owned.  The description is true to its word.  The material is ultra-soft and super plush.

Being the proud pet parent to five rescue dogs, the extra-large size is a must.  My whole pack can snuggle with me under its incredible softness.  Hope also took an instant liking to the blanket.  After a few sniffs, she immediately began to burrow and promptly fell asleep.

Hope checks out her new blanket.

"Yep, it looks just like me!"

I would highly recommend BringerPet to animal lovers of all ages.  They even have a special section on their website offering products specifically for children.  Their products will make fabulously unique gifts for the pet parent in your life.

Grumpy Cat's First Worst Christmas Book Review

Internet sensation Grumpy Cat stars in Grumpy Cat's First Worst Christmas.  Grumpy's friend, Pokey, tries everything she can think of to get Grumpy Cat in the holiday spirit.  She suggests making a snow-cat, decorating the Christmas tree and even baking cookies for Santa.

Grumpy Cat cannot seem to find anything to like about the most wonderful time of the year.  Instead, she wants to live in her wonderland of NO.  Will Pokey be able to change Grumpy Cat's mind and keep her off of Santa's naughty list?

I am a huge Grumpy Cat fan, however, I was greatly disappointed with this book.  I found Grumpy Cat to be too grumpy and very depressing.  While I did chuckle at several instances of Grumpy Cat's grumpiness, I do not feel that the few laughs saved the book.

There also seems to be no plot to the story.  The whole theme is simply Grumpy Cat hating Christmas.  I do not think that this is a very good story to read to children, especially during the holidays, which are supposed to be happy and joyous occasions.

While I realize that Grumpy Cat's claim to fame are memes showcasing her sassy and grumpy attitude, this book is simply too one dimensional and melancholy for me.  I feel that this story is more geared towards adults who would better appreciate Grumpy Cat's personality.

Yoda: The Story of a Cat and His Kittens Book Review

Yoda was once a gorgeous Persian kitten.  He had the most luxurious white fur that looked like freshly fallen snow.  Yoda also had dreams of becoming a super cat!

But those days were long gone.  Yoda had been dumped at an animal shelter by his previous owner.  Now, his white fur was covered with dirt.  He had lost tons of weight because he was too sad to eat.

One day, a woman named Beth came into the shelter.  She immediately chose Yoda to be a part of her family.  He was excited to finally be adopted, but something still didn't feel right.  Then he discovered a room in his new home that housed four foster kittens.

The cuddly cats were out of control!  Yoda just knew that he had to whip the kittens into shape.  Will he be able to control the kitty chaos?  Can Yoda achieve his dream of becoming a super cat?

This is a very touching story.  I love that the book is based on true events.  I also love reading about animals that are given a second chance at life.  The book also sheds light on the importance of animal adoption.  In fact, all proceeds from the sale of the book are donated to the North Shore Animal League America's Bianca's Furry Friends campaign.

I believe that readers of all ages will be able relate to Yoda's longing to find a purpose.  Children will delight in Devin Crane's illustrations.  Yoda and the kittens are whimsical and adorable.  Cat lovers will especially enjoy this comical kitty read.

The Adventures of Honey and Leon Book Review

Leon is a Chihuahua from Brooklyn who knows how to hold his own.  Honey is a rescue mutt with a flare for acting.  They live together with their two dads in New York City.

While the pampered pooches seem to have it made, there is one problem.  Their dads are always traveling for work.  Leon and Honey miss their dads and want to protect them at all times.

One day, Honey hears the familiar sound of luggage being moved.  She and Leon quickly devise a plan to secretly follow their dads.  With bags packed, the mischievous pair hail a taxi and head to the airport.

Will this dynamic duo be able to stay incognito?  Can they complete their mission to protect their dads?  Will Honey ever become a famous actress?

I love this book!  This is definitely one of my all time favorite picture books.  The story is overflowing with humor and heart.  I also love how the book encompasses modern day technology and family life.  From Honey snapping a selfie to the discussion of same-sex couples, this book truly has it all.

Being a pet parent to five rescue dogs, I can totally relate to how much I miss them when I have to go to work or travel to a conference.  I have often wondered what it would be like to take them with me.  I am sure that chaos would ensue, much like with Leon and Honey.

Grant Shaffer's illustrations are beyond adorable.  I love how Shaffer uses pale and pastel colors for the backgrounds while using bold and vibrant colors for the main characters.  This definitely makes Leon and Honey pop off of the page.  I also love how creative Shaffer is with his artwork.  Having a Where's Waldo type spread on the first two pages of the book is pure genius.

I would highly recommend this book to readers of all ages.  Everyone will delight in Leon and Honey's silly antics.  I hope that these courageous canines will have many more adventures to come.

Maverick and Me Book Review

Maverick shivered as the rain beat down on his tiny head.  The poor pup was weak and all alone.  Suddenly, Maverick felt himself being lifted into the arms of a woman with a soft coat.

He was overjoyed when he then met the manager of a pet supply store who gave him a big bowl of food to eat.  The woman who had rescued Maverick decided to take care of him and help prepare the pooch for adoption.  When adoption day arrived, Maverick was so excited.  He just knew that he was going to find the perfect forever home.

Maverick watched as the other dogs were adopted one by one.  Adoption day was almost over and he had not yet found his family.  Will Maverick ever find a place where he belongs?

I adore this book!  I love the personal message from author Katherine Schwarzenegger featured at the beginning.  This story definitely tugged on my heartstrings.  True stories about rescued animals getting a second chance at life always make me smile.  I especially love that the book sheds light on the adoption option.

Being the proud pet parent of five rescue dogs and three cats in addition to being an animal advocate and volunteer for various rescue groups and organizations, I am thrilled that this book highlights the importance of foster parents for animals.  Additionally, I love that Scarlett shares her passion for animal adoption with her friends.  This is a very important message that should definitely be taught to children at a young age.

This is a fantastic read for animal lovers of all ages.  I also believe that this book could serve as an educational text for humane education programs for area rescue groups and shelters.  The book would also make a great gift for people with children who are interested in adopting a new pet.

The Great Puppy Invasion Book Review

Strictville is a very serious town with even more serious rules.  Fun is forbidden.  Playing is prohibited.  Everything must be in perfect order at all times.

One day, a puppy appears in the town.  Teddy cannot believe his eyes as the puppy seems to magically multiple.  Soon hundreds of puppies have taken over Strictville!  What could these curious canines be up to?  How will the townspeople handle all of the puppy cuteness?  Can the mayor put an end to the doggy disaster?

I absolutely loved this book!  I was hooked from page one.  Being the proud pet parent to five rescue dogs, I cannot imagine living in a town that has never seen puppies before.  I found this story to be a fresh perspective to the "all work and no play" adage.

Kim Smith's illustrations are stunning.  The puppies seriously could not be any cuter.  Their facial expressions (especially the eyes) are hilarious and heartwarming.  Children will definitely fall in love with the colorful cast of canine characters.

This is a fantastic read for dog lovers of all ages.  I think this book also serves as a great reminder to adults to be sure to take time to play each and every day.

Lola Gets a Cat Book Review

Lola loves cats.  She asks her mom if she can have a cat but is told that they are a lot of work.  Not to be deterred, Lola sets out on a mission to prove that she can handle the responsibility.

She goes to the library and checks out a book all about cats and their care.  Lola then begins to treat her stuffed cat, Dinah, like a real cat.  Will she be able to convince her mom that she is well prepared to bring a kitten home?

This book is a fun read for children ages 3 through 9.  The story especially touched my heart because I have a passion for rescue animals.  All of my cats were strays at one time.  I love how this story raises awareness about the importance of adopting animals from local shelters and rescue groups.

Rosalind Beardshaw's illustrations are delightfully adorable.  Children will fall in love with the cute little kitten.  I also love Beardshaw's use of bright and bold colors.  These illustrations will definitely capture the attention of little ones.

Overall, this is a wonderful read.  I would highly recommend gifting this book to a child that is in the process of adopting a cat.

The Happy Tale of Two Cats Book Review

Two cats living on the very same street are leading very different lives.  Happy is surrounded by a family who loves her.  The unhappy cat spends most of her time being yelled at by her family.

One day, the unhappy cat's family moves away and leaves her behind.  Will the unhappy cat be able to find shelter?  Will she ever find someone to love her?

I greatly enjoyed this book.  This story especially touched my heart because I have a passion for rescue animals.  All of my cats were strays at one time.  I love how this story raises awareness about the fact that not all animals are in loving homes.

Jessica Warrick's illustrations are delightfully adorable.  Animal lovers of all ages will fall in love with Happy and the unhappy cat.  I also love the sketch look that the illustrations have.  Hand drawn  illustrations are my favorite because it truly showcases the talent of the illustrator.

Overall, this is a wonderful read with a powerful message.  I would highly recommend gifting this book to a child that is in the process of adopting a cat.

The Lucky Tale of Two Dogs Book Review

Two dogs living on the very same street are leading very different lives.  Lucky is surrounded by a family who loves him.  The unlucky dog spends most of his time alone in the backyard.

One day, the unlucky dog breaks out of the fence that imprisons him.  He races down the street straight into heavy traffic.  Will the unlucky pooch be able to navigate his way through rush hour?  Will he ever find someone to love him?

I greatly enjoyed this book.  This story especially touched my heart because I have a passion for rescue animals.  All of my dogs were strays at one time.  They suffered horrible trauma both physical and mental at the hands of their former owners.  I love how this story raises awareness about the fact that not all animals are in loving homes.

My Name is Bob Book Review

My Name is Bob by James Bowen and Garry Jenkins tells the incredible true story of a stray cat who was destined for fame.  Bob had not always been a stray.  He once belonged to a sweet, old woman.  When the woman passed away, Bob had nowhere to go.

He soon found himself wandering the cold streets of London, homeless.  After getting into a fight with a resident street cat, Bob found his way to James Bowen, a local street performer.  Seeing that Bob was injured, Bowen took him in and cared for his wounds.  What happened next was the beginning of a lifelong friendship that can never be broken.

I absolutely adore this story.  I truly believe that animals have a way of knowing which human is in need of their affection.  I also love true stories involving rescued animals.  We rescued our cat, Miracle, from the middle of Main Street in our town when she was just two weeks old.  Stories that involve animals getting a second chance at life make my heart smile.

Animal lovers of all ages will be captivated by Bob's journey from stray to celebrity.  As told from Bob's point of view, readers will be drawn to his quiet personality and charm.  The illustrations by Gerald Kelley are wonderful and rich.  I love the depth and emotion that each illustration contains.

My favorite part of the book is the photo album in the back.  I love getting to see how happy Bob and James are living their lives together.  I would highly recommend this book to readers both young and old.

Unlovable Book Review

Unlovable by Dan Yaccarino introduces the reader to a Pug named Alfred.  No one seems to like the portly pooch.  All anyone ever tells Alfred is that he is unlovable.

Alfred spends most of his days alone hoping to find a friend.  One day, new neighbors move in next door.  He soon discovers that they have a dog!  Could this new pup be the friend Alfred has been dreaming of?

I found this to be a touching and heartwarming story.  I fell in love with Alfred on page one and rooted for him the whole way.  Being the proud pet parent to several differently-abled animals, I know all too well how cruel others can be.  Some heartless souls have had the nerve to call my furry babies "ugly" and "weird," but I could not care less.  In my eyes, they are perfect.  I believe that readers both young and old will be able to relate to Alfred and his search for friendship.

Yaccarino's illustrations are simplistic yet stunning.  Alfred could not be any cuter.  I also like his bold color choices and use of smooth lines.

Readers of all ages will enjoy this touching tale.

Chris P. Bacon: My Life So Far... Book Review

Chris P. Bacon:  My Life So Far by Len Lucero and Kristina Tracy tells the true story of YouTube sensation Chris P. Bacon.  This little piglet was born special.  He cannot use his back legs like most pigs.

Dr. Len Lucero decided to make Chris P. Bacon a part of their furry family.  He then realized that Chris would greatly benefit from a custom made cart that would allow Chris to run like the wind.  It took several tries, but Chris soon mastered the cart.  Dr. Lucero recorded Chris running around the house with his cart and posted the video to YouTube.  The video went viral and Chris became a star.

I loved this story.  I have a special place in my heart for differently-abled animals.  Having adopted several myself, I fully understand the challenges that these unique animals have.  This book is a shining example of the fact the being differently-abled does not mean disabled.

Animal lovers of all ages will fall in love with Chris P. Bacon and his mission to conquer the cart while stealing people's hearts.  I especially love how Penny Weber's illustrations are mixed with actual photos of Chris.  My favorite part of the book is the photo album at the end.

This is a  fabulous read for young and old alike.  I could definitely see this book being used in humane education classes at local animal rescue groups and shelters.

Widget Book Review

Widget is a stray dog searching for a home.  While walking in the rain, he discovers the house of Mrs. Diggs.  The house is warm and cozy...and filled with cats!

Mrs. Diggs wants Widget to stay but that will be up to her six cats to decide.  Widget really wants to be part of the family.  Will pretending to be a cat grant him the approval he seeks?

I found this story to be charming from start to finish.  Children will definitely relate to Widget and his quest to fit in.  This book especially tugged at my heartstrings because I support rescued animals.  From adopting five dogs and three cats to volunteering at the Animal Protection Agency of Missouri, I absolutely love shedding light on the importance of adopting animals from local rescue groups and shelters.

Jim McFarland's illustrations are classic and timeless.  Children will fall in love with Widget and cheer him on in his quest to find a forever home.  I love seeing Widget's range of emotions as expressed by his facial features and fur.

Overall, this is a wonderful book for animal lovers of all ages.  This book could also be used in a humane education class for local shelter and rescue groups.

LaRue for Mayor Letters from the Campaign Trail Book Review

Ike LaRue is back in an all new adventure in LaRue For Mayor Letters from the Campaign Trail written and illustrated by Mark Teague.  When Ike attends a political rally for Hugo Bugwort, he is shocked to hear that Snort City has a "dog problem."  Bugwort believes that the answer is to eliminate dogs from the town.

Ike cannot believe his canine ears!  A Snort City without dogs?  Not on his watch!  After careful consideration, he decides that he too will run for mayor.  Will a series of unfortunate events cost Ike voters?  Will Snort City truly become dogless?

This is another fantastic page turner from Teague.  I loved every second of this story.  Ike's voice is powerful and heartfelt throughout.  Perhaps some of my dogs should run for mayor...

Teague's illustrations are fabulous as always.  He again combines Ike's reality with his imagination to create truly stunning pictures.  I especially love his use of the colors red, white and blue.

Readers of all ages will cheer Ike on in his campaign quest.  This book would also make a wonderful gift for the animal lover in your life.

Dear Mrs. LaRue Letters from Obedience School Book Review

Dear Mrs. LaRue Letters from Obedience School written and illustrated by Mark Teague tells the tale of a misunderstood pooch, Ike.  After a series of unfortunate events, Mrs. LaRue decides to send Ike to the Brotweiler Canine Academy for obedience training.

Ike sends Mrs. LaRue letters daily describing the horrible conditions that he is in.  He relentlessly pleads his case requesting to come home immediately.  Will Ike ever learn how to be a good dog?  Will Mrs. LaRue ever forgive Ike for his transgressions?

I absolutely loved this book!  My interest was peaked from start to finish.  I love that the story is epistolary (told all in letters).  Ike has a very distinctive voice and style that can be seen in each letter.  I also love the fact that the story is told from the dog's point of view.  I am quite sure that my own furry pack have some stories to tell.

Teague's illustrations are fantastic.  I love the way that he combines Ike's reality with his imagination.  This is a wonderful story for dog lovers of all ages.  I cannot wait to read the next book in the LaRue series.

Buddy continues his training with a lesson on cats throughout history.  But the most important lesson of all is that of catitude.  Will his students be able to master the techniques to become perfect cats?

I absolutely love this book!  Talbott tells a fantastic story filled with history, humor and heart.  I found myself laughing with every turn of the page.  Buddy is one feisty feline and his life lessons are timeless.

This story will certainly ring true with cat owners of all ages.  I am definitely reminded of my three fur balls, Miracle, Olaf and Sven.  The illustrations are gorgeous and highly entertaining.  Children will fall in love with the curious kittens.  I especially enjoy the page where the kittens are decorating their family's home.  My cats have certainly made their mark on my heart and in my house.
